1. Take hunter education.

  • Hunter Education is mandatory for anyone born on or after Sept. 2, 1971. Courses are offered statewide. Many fill  quickly.
  • Becoming an Outdoors Woman workshops create an atmosphere where many women feel comfortable learning to hunt, fish, and enjoy other outdoor activities.

Become familiar with Texas Hunting Regulations, including the county where you will be hunting. Pick up an Outdoor Annual in print wherever hunting licenses are sold.

3. Buy your hunting license.

You need a license to hunt in Texas. Depending on what you hunt, you may need "endorsements" in addition to your license. The best deal is the Super Combo. Texas hunting and fishing licenses are sold by more than 1,600 "agents" statewide, as well as online

4. Get your hunting gear ready, and practice.

Match your firearm to the species you plan to hunt. Many sporting goods stores specialize in hunting and can help show you what is available.

Become an accurate shooter before attempting to hunt. Maintain and develop your skills throughout the year. There are many rifle ranges and clay target ranges (skeet, trap and sporting clays) around the state.

5. Find a place to hunt.

With about 5,000 special supervised and guided hunts, and over 200 public hunting areas (including Wildlife Management Areas, state parks, U.S. Forest Service lands and even private lands), public hunts are an economical way to experience Texas hunting. See the list of places that offer public hunts.

Walk-in Hunts

The $48 Annual Public Hunting Permit offers nearly year-round hunting on approximately 1.2 million acres of land. The increasingly popular dove hunting areas are offered through this system.
